I talked to the firewood guy at my work today. He said hell bring it to work on thursday, and all Ill have to pay is $20 for gas money. The first time he approached me about it he said he would bring a truck load, just hope its the same. Plus Im thinking about taking a half day thursday so ill get out at 830 pm.
Not really. Dry poplar is still lousy firewood. It burns too fast to be satisfactory in most situations. Most lighter weight, faster growing hardwoods are like that. Softwoods...well, I dont know of any that make a satisfactory firewood, at least none that grow in the U.S. south, or as far north as upstate NY. Pines are too resinous, creating chimney creosote problems even when dry. And, like poplar, they burn too fast.
CHALLIS -- Earl Waite recently returned home after spending 18 months at the federal prison in Sheridan, Oregon. Waite, 56, was accused by U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Special Agent Pat Green of having cut nine cords of firewood from state lands to which federal administrators claim ownership in what is commonly recognized as the Salmon-Challis and Sawtooth National Forest. Waite claims he only cut one Douglas fir tree up for firewood and that he had permits allowing him to do so.
I hate to argue with Charlie, but in this case all the people weighing in on the firewood debate seem to be from areas where hardwoods reign. The truth is that if it will burn, it will heat. Dryer is better, and some woods work better than others, but essentially anything you can cram in the stove or fireplace will make heat. Well, yes, of course -- but the point is that some woods do a better job of making heat than others. I hope you dont mean to suggest that aspen and cottonwood make just as good firewood as hickory and white oak.
5. Someone unable to travel, as I have posted numerous offers to this newsgroup for "free self service firewood" for those who wanted to drive out and get some. If someone wants free firewood and can travel, they are welcome to come up and get their own.
